H&M - Don't go back there!

On a recent visit to the Flypaper blog I was excited and then immediately shocked by what I witnessed. First, Flypaper blogged about H&M's new spring line, which was exciting because there designs are always hot, or at least usually hot. Next I looked further at the outfits Flypaper had posted, all were cute except for one. The outfit in question is far from cute, in fact, it was down right hideous. I think you can guess which outfit I'm talking about.

H&M's Spring 2007 line is very retro inspired, which I'm a fan of. However, like Flypaper, I don't agree with going back to high waistline, or mom jeans. I'm perfectly happy with designer hip hugger jeans, and am not ready to start wearing "hip cover jeans". What do you think?

Holiday Dresses at Madewell 1937

J.Crews newly launched off-shoot Madewell 1937 has opened a temporary store in SOHO. I went for the first time today and they had some adorable 100% silk dresses, blouses and skirts that would be perfect for the holidays. What I like about these pieces is they can be dressed up for fancier occasions. I think they would look amazing with the lace tights I posted about earlier in the month. Or they can be paired more casual pieces like in the photos.

House and Wear Canvas Handbags

I came across these adorable canvas handbags by designer House and Wear. I really like canvas handbags but they can be a bit boring. These styles however are unique and stylish and at $120 they would make a great gift as well.

Hot or Not? Colored Tights

I have seen an infusion of these jewel toned colored tights lately. Sparked partially by H&M's ad campaign. The thing is I think these tights only look good with black, otherwiste there is just too much color. The verdict is still out.

Happy Birthday Barneys Girl!

Last weekend, Barneys Girl visited London to pre-celebrate her Bday. We went for a big dinner with our friends and went clubbing at Leister Square. As per our usual custom, I'm dedicating a Happy Birthday post for her. Here's a list of lovelies that she wants:

Gorgeous, super versatile Stella McCartney boots.

The tres chic pair of Miu Miu boots that she blogged about two weeks ago. BG already has a matching Miu Miu bag to go with these boots -maybe she'll get these someday?

BriteSmile whitening treatment -I never knew she wanted it, but apparently she does! Do whitening treatments actually work well, and how long do they last?

Hoop earrings (her fav kind) by a brand I just discovered called Shaun Leane. BG usually sticks to the very basic hoops, but some variation is always fun.

A dinner at Ruth Chris. BG's been away from Ruth Chris for too long -she wants American steak now!

A mega gorgeous, adorable coat from Zara. This season, both of us are loving the coats from Zara. Seriously, they're so pretty and affordable. We each bought a coat from there this season already!

And finally, the Chanel 4-colour eye shadow palette that we've been drooling for since we learnt makeup. Chanel eyeshadow's quality and shimmer is absolutely unmatched. BG wishes for the purple palette *hint hint people*.

Have fun celebrating in Paris BG!

Halloween 06 Special: The Corpse Look

Happy Halloween people! I'm not one to dress up, but to join in the festives, I'm going to blog about the 'corpse look', which is interestingly also one of the FW06 beauty trend. What is the 'corpse look'? Basically, it's super pale skin, pale lips and light brown eye-shadow.

The 'corpse look' as seen on the FW06 runway:
Marni had the best corpse look. Tanya (first picture above) totally rocked this look.

Vera Wang had the more elegant (if that's possible) corpse look. The models have a bit of purple eye-shadow on instead of only brown. Oh, having that Eastern European/ Russian face really helps to achieve this look. But since we can't control that, you could just apply very pale powder onto your face, (but not too much or else you'll look caked!)

The corpse look is actually a variation of this season's popular brown eye-shadow look. This Bobbi Brown chocolate palette is perfect to achieve this look. Make sure whatever eye-shadow you use is matte (no shimmer.) Apply the eye-shadow on the eyelids, and a tiny bit along the lower lashes. To make your lips pale, apply a bit of foundation and nude or whitish-pink lip stick. Do not use lip gloss since well, the corpse look isn't meant to be glossy or cheerful.

This look is a very runway, couture-ish look, so what better time to play with it than Halloween? Besides, it's always nice to look elegant while endulging in childish fun.

So, what are you dressed up as today?

Happy 4th of July!

Celebrate the 4th of July holiday with these very patriotic pieces!

Blue and candy red striped dresses perfect forthe summer days, both from Anthropologie.

This season's hottest white eyelet and lace shirts from Diane von Furstenburg and Tracy Reese (don't like the orange/peachy dress though).

The lacy blue tunic shirt looks sooo unique (AKA New York Market) and the intricate white jacket and long blue shirt inside is just goooorgeous (Twelfth Street By Cynthia Vincent)!

Keep warm in the air conditioning. I simply LOVE the white striped blazer with the splashes of red from Alicia + Olivia. And the white biker jacket from AX is just cool.

Stroll in the summer sun in these elegant Versace wedges. For something more comfortable, there's always these adorable red Tod's flats.

Add some color to your look with this blue Marc by Marc Jacobs bag (that will also totally last your through fall) and this red Fendi B Bag.

Lastly, there is the white Dior saddle bag and the red Vuitton Bedford bag that are just fabulous.

Have a great Independence Day everyone!

Haute Couture FW06 II

I just moved the day before and *horror of horror*, my internet suddenly broke down yesterday! So ya, that's why this is a bit late......

Christian Dior

Wow, talk about wild, crazy imagination. This show looked more like a feminine Halloween costume show, with complimentary theatrical makeup of course. This show is supposed to have some kind of Renaissance feel to it, but to me, it felt like a show of many exotic creatures in a scary UFO-attacks-Earth scenario. But there is no doubt that each piece of costume is couture -intricate details, beautiful material and cut dramatically.

First, meet the Egyptian Queen Knight, dressed in dazzling gold. Then there is a black knight from her team. She will scare away all enemies with her scary look and heavy armor.

A huge, furry animals arrives, followed by a strong, independent (and obviously stylish) spy. The red dress reminds me of the dresses from the Dior Cruise collection.

The pretty pink creature here is the somewhat normal, lovely one. Then there is the court jester, who also doubles as a tree with the planet flag on top.

And making way for the arriving spaceman, John Galliano, is a soldier who not only is dressed in eye-catching colours, but is also wearing a metal helmet.

Armani Prive

Compared to Dior, Armani's haute couture is certainly a lot less dramatic, but there was certainly a more distinct difference between this collection and the normal RTW collections. The dresses in this Prive collection are also a lot less 'slinky sleek' and more 'classic girly.'

I really like this coat -it's typically sleek, but it's the creative collar that stands out.

As usual, the whole collection is cream/white, black and grey, (with very few exceptions.)

Sooo pretty! *Drools* Somtimes classic colours are really the best.

Picture this: Two rich best friends arriving together at a gala. They're pretty, elegant and stylish in a classy way. Oh yea, what I want to say is... the dresses are absolutely gorgeous!

Haute Couture FW06 I

It is finally the season of the beautiful, mega expensive Haute Coutures again!

Chanel
Karl never fails to amaze me with the many ways he reinterpret's Coco's original designs while still keeping it very much Chanel. This time around he went for being modern, by encompassing modern styles and techniques with Chanel's intricate classic designs.
He started off with these black and white, very straight and structured creations- very neat and cute.
I love the intricate details given to Haute Coutures. I esp adore the black dress on the right, with the gold leaf details. It makes it look so delicate.

I think these two tweeds looks may actually BE warm enough to actually be worn in Fall/Winter 06/07!! Its thick without looking bulky. And btw, the things that look like scrunched up tights on their legs (as I'd originally thought) are not tights, but very long boots in materials that look like stockings. Don't know what Karl was thinking there.Ah, the modern technique I was talking about that Coco didn't have back in her time. Love the grey dress, its looks so adorable! The red one is very dramatic and reminds me of John Galliano's last vampire/french revolution collection for Dior.
The evening gowns were of course absolutely beautiful. And while the white wedding dress is not something I would choose for myself, it IS very cute, modern and young.

Valentino

The other haute couture classic I look out for is Valentino. You can always trust them to produce the most elegant and gorgeous clothes.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Influenced by the Russians, this season Valentino started off with a richly embroidered black coat that screams Russian. Then there was this black and white dress- I love the sleeves.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

The poofy sleeves were very common in this collection, having been encompassed into chic suits and set. I love the gold outfit, it reminds me of a more elegant and fitted version of recent Chloe creations.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Of course, the classic elegantly fitted looks were still there with gold trims and details added on to give it a more russian flare.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Sigh, I adore these slinky silver and gold dresses with leaf details. It so elegant and classy.

Naturally the evening dresses were stunning. Sigh . . . . I got to work harder!

Haute Couture FW06 III

Today's the last post for the FW06 Haute Couture shows. To be honest, I don't love haute couture collections as much as RTW collections because afterall, I actually get to wear RTW collections, (or at least their high street versions.) But as I looked at the photos one by one from the Lacroix and Gaultier shows, I can't help but sigh... sooo pretty.

Christian Lacroix

Whenever I window shop in high-end department stores and stumble across the Lacroix section, I always end up disappointed because the clothes sold are just so... messy (the design) and untrendy. But it's the couture shows that remind me every half a year why I admire this brand.

For some odd reasons, I keep seeing bits and pieces of other RTW designers' designs at the beginning of this collection. Like the coat on the left reminds me a bit of Marc by Marc Jacobs girly cutting.

(And these sort of remind me of Anna Sui.) Nevertheless, I love all the cream and gold colours used. So lovely.

These dresses are not what I would describe as 'pretty', (maybe except for the middle one,) but I really like them. The black dresses remind me of dresses of gothic dolls -sophisticated dolls of course.

Love both of these dresses. The brown bubble dress is adorable in a slightly edgy way, and the dress on the right is royal without being princess-y sweet.

Jean Paul Gaultier

While Gaultier is not the fanciest nor grandest haute collection, it's definately the darkest and most edgy haute collection.

I can totally picture a rich Parisian lady walking down the street in this fur-trimmed, crocodile-skin coat. (I'm not 100% sure it's crocodile skin.) And on the right is a perfect LBD for the not-so-boring people.

Now this is a scary amount of fur, layers and layers of it! On the right is another seemingly simple, but actually not so simple dress. I love the gold silk layer under the maroon chiffon. It adds a lot of dimension to the dress.

The model is literally 'foxy'. Not only is there a fox 'necklace', the dress has a fur tail trailing behind. On the right is a old-French-style dress.

Most people are more amazed by the purple web dress on the right, but personally I found the dress on the left more eye-catching. Look at the details: I'm not talking about the painting-like pattern on the dress, but the web or wire-looking material that is moving on the left side. That flap really adds definition to an otherwise unexciting dress.

Hmm... I think the Christian Lacroix collection was my favourite out of all the FW06 haute couture collections. It's not the most innovative collection, but I love the combination of the prettiness, flattering cuts and slight edginess.
